With
the release of the Vista operating system, Microsoft
has drastically changed the "Windows environment".
Many software programs are struggling to update their
software in order to function with this new operating
system. If you are running Windows Vista, please
read all of the following before you purchase and/or
Install our program.
Windows
Vista has implemented many changes in order to address
the new security issues (malicious software and viruses)
that continue to plaque our world. Some of these changes
have made our program and many others inoperable in
Vista.
Microsoft has addressed these issues of backward compatibility
by providing a "Work around". However, the
alternative "work around" will reintroduce
some of the risk that are found in Windows XP and other
previous Windows operating systems. If you have a computer
that is running Window XP or Windows 2000, we recommend
that you purchase that version of Boards by the Numbers.
If you absolutely need a Vista version, you need to
understand what is required and the risk involved. Below
is a list of requirements that will allow Boards by
the Numbers to run on a Vista computer.
- A
significant focus of Windows Vista is security. While
making computers more secure, it also has complicated
the installation process of software venders. If
a user wishes to run a program that requires administrator
permissions (setup or installation files), they must
give consent through a User Account Control prompt.
You will see many of these UAC prompts that will appear
very ominous, however, you need to allow the installation
to proceed by clicking Allow, Continue or OK.
- Windows
Help (WinHlp32.exe) is a Help program that has been
included with Microsoft Windows versions starting
with the Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating system. WinHlp32.exe
is required in order to display all of the notes in
Boards by the Numbers.
Starting with the Windows Vista operating system release,
the Windows Help program will not ship as a component
of the Windows operating system. Also, third-party
programs ( like Boards by the Numbers) are prohibited
from redistributing the Windows Help program together
with their products.
If you want to purchase and run Boards by the Numbers,
you
must download the program from the Microsoft Download
Center, and then install it on your computer before
you install Boards by the Numbers.
This download is available to customers running genuine
Microsoft Windows. You will
be required to run Windows validation. Windows Vista
users must pass Microsoft Genuine validation requirements
before you can download the file. Please read
all the information and follow their instruction slowly
and carefully. You may uninstall this update
(KB917607) when you are finished using Boards by the
Numbers if you wish. Click
here to view Microsofts download page for the
update.
- The
Microsoft Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program for
Vista that is mentioned in item 2, will allow our
notes to be viewed. However, our program requires
a help macro in order to display the contents. Winhelp
Macros are disabled in Vista. A work around (requires
a registry edit) is available that will allow the
Help macros to run. However, if users view Help
files from an unknown source, the computer may be
put at more risk if they enable these settings. If
you do not open any old help files (.hlp) extension,
you will not increase your risk. Also this is uninstalled
automatically when you are finished with Boards and
you uninstall Boards by the Numbers.

will receive at our download page.
Our
Vista version can be ordered at our on-line store. However, you must verify that you have read this information.
Again, if you have a Windows XP or Windows 2000 computer,
we highly recommend purchasing that version of Boards
by the Numbers from our on-line store.
